What synth waveforms can I use to make a reese bass?

Q&A

Jan 26, 2026

A reese bass uses two slightly detuned saw waves that create phase beating, which is the wub-wub-wub sound from the oscillators canceling each other out at certain points. While I like using saws because they give you all the harmonics to work with, you can actually make reese basses with any waveform: squares, triangles, sines, or even pulse waves will create that characteristic phase beating when detuned.
